Background of the Study

Urban sprawl, characterized by the expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural lands, has become a significant issue in many parts of Nigeria, including Ilorin West Local Government Area (LGA) in Kwara State. As the population in Ilorin continues to grow, the demand for housing, infrastructure, and commercial spaces has led to the encroachment of green spaces such as parks, forests, and agricultural lands. Green spaces are critical to maintaining biodiversity, improving air quality, and providing recreational areas for urban dwellers. However, urban sprawl has led to the reduction and fragmentation of these essential areas, causing environmental degradation and affecting the quality of life for residents. This study aims to investigate the effects of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West, examining how rapid urbanization is impacting the availability and accessibility of these spaces and proposing strategies for their preservation (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Ilorin West LGA, urban sprawl has led to the loss of several green spaces, with rapid development encroaching on parks, forests, and agricultural lands. The absence of strategic urban planning has exacerbated the problem, making it difficult to balance development needs with the preservation of green spaces. This reduction in green spaces has had negative environmental, social, and health impacts, including reduced air quality, loss of recreational areas, and diminished biodiversity. This study seeks to assess the effects of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West and recommend measures to protect and expand these spaces in the face of urban growth.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the impact of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West LGA.

• To identify the factors contributing to the loss of green spaces in the area.

• To recommend sustainable urban planning practices that can preserve and expand green spaces in Ilorin West.

1.4 Research Questions

• What is the impact of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West LGA?

• What are the main factors contributing to the loss of green spaces in the area?

• How can urban planning be improved to protect green spaces in Ilorin West?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Urban sprawl significantly contributes to the reduction of green spaces in Ilorin West LGA.

• H2: Rapid population growth and lack of proper urban planning are major contributors to the loss of green spaces in the area.

• H3: Sustainable urban planning practices will help mitigate the negative effects of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the effects of urban sprawl on green spaces in Ilorin West LGA and highlight the importance of preserving these spaces for the well-being of the urban population. The findings will inform policymakers and urban planners about the need for more sustainable urban development strategies that prioritize green spaces. Additionally, the study will contribute to broader discussions on urban sustainability and environmental conservation in Nigerian cities (Ogunleye & Adebayo, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Ilorin West LGA, examining the effects of urban sprawl on green spaces within the area. It will analyze the causes and consequences of green space reduction and suggest measures for improvement. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing accurate data on green space coverage and the challenges of assessing long-term urban sprawl impacts.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Urban Sprawl: The uncontrolled and unplanned expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural or agricultural land.

• Green Spaces: Areas of vegetation, such as parks, forests, and gardens, within urban environments that provide ecological, recreational, and aesthetic benefits.

• Urban Planning: The process of designing and managing the development of urban areas to ensure sustainable and efficient land use.
